Sardinian reviews

Thursday, May 28 – Alghero

Hotel Alghero Sardinia

Friday, May 29 – Stintino

Park Hotel Asinara Stintino (5/5) – Enjoyed a very wonderful stay. The hotel is lovely – the flowers, the view. The room was perfect – immaculately clean, quiet. Delicious breakfast. Convenient location. And the service was first-rate. Extremely good value.

Saturday, May 30 – Santa Teresa di Gallura

Hotel Moderno in Santa Teresa di Gallura (4/5) – Charming family-run hotel in the center of Santa Teresa di Gallura. Easy walk to restaurants, the port if you want to take a boat excursion to Magdalena. Very friendly staff, always smiling and eager to be helpful. Delighted with our stay.

Sunday, May 31 – Cala Gonone

Hotel Il Nuovo Gabbiano (4/5) – We enjoyed a wonderful evening in Cala Gonone and a very pleasant stay at centrally located Il Nunovo Gabbiano. Roberta was amazingly warm and helpful, helping to make the stay memorable. Our room, while clean, spacious, and quiet, had a bit of a musty smell – possibly because of the ocean location. We left the window open and it was much better after a while. The Il Nuovo Gabbiano restaurant in the hotel, run by another proprietor, served us a meal that even for Sardinia was remarkable.

Il Nuovo Gabbiano, Cala Gonone Restaurant (5/5) – Phenomenal.  We started the meal by ordering a “seafood starter,” advertised as 6 different small seafood samples. It seemed a little pricey at 22€, but when 6 then 8 then 10 amazingly different, exotic, tasty and large seafood samples arrived, we were stunned. For whatever reason, the chef went way overboard and blessed us one of the best meals we have ever had anywhere. Having already committed to a “prima” of a special homemade pasta and clams and mussels, when that arrived we could hardly imagine eating any more. But when we tasted it, of course we did. A really, really special meal and night. When we thanked the chef upon leaving he was genuinely touched – it was clear he loves food and wants to make his customers happy.

Monday, June 1 – Portoconte (Alghero)

Hotel Portoconte (3/5) – Industrial-scale “resort” hotel on the outskirts of Alghero that seems to cater to overweight tourists from northern Europe. Room was clean but very small, and much more expensive than other places we stayed in Sardinia. Restaurant was closed for dinner but the restaurant they recommended was quite good. Terrible breakfast – machine-made cafes that were barely drinkable, no eggs, mediocre selection.
